MUSIC-RELATED QUOTE OF THE DAY

Postby sarah on Thu Apr 24, 2008 2:03 am

"Not to mince words, Mr. Epstein, but we don’t like your boys’ sound. Groups are out; four-piece groups with guitars particularly are finished."

-Dick Rowe, executive in charge of new talent at Decca Records, turns down the chance to sign The Beatles in 1961.

One of my favorites, as always:

"Do poorly in school, nearly flunk out, barely graduate, then start a punk-rock band. If I'm a role model, then we're in trouble."

That sure sounded like an amazing party. I wish someone would recount it.

"On Sundays, we'd always visit Uncle Robert, who was the organist at a methodist church in La Verne, California. Uncle Robert had a pipe organ in his house that went right through the roof. When he would play he would smear all the notes together like hot melted crayons and the whole house would shake.I remember his house was a complete mess; his clothes were everywhere, his bed was never made. "Now this is show business," I thought to myself. I asked my mom why I couldn't keep my room like Uncle Robert's, and she said, "Tom, your Uncle Robert is blind."

I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.

Between my friend James and me:

J: heh you know that band the Subways?
M: No
J: they were pretty popular a few years ago, one of those bands where the singer/lead guitarist is married to the female bass player and did lots of lovey songs around that dynamic
J: now they're divorced, but still in the same band, only the songs have a harder edge lol
M: So now they're No Doubt.
J: pretty much
J: so in a couple of years she'll start churning out terrible rap-wannabe music
M: Awesome!
J: god.

Yeah, the poor other members of No Doubt,
Before: "Sure we'll let your little sister sing for us for a while! She's even pretty cute!"
After: "Press Debit or Credit, please."

I'm sure the other members of No Doubt are doing just fine... if anything, Gavin Rossdale is mooching money off of Gwen.

Here's one of my favourite coulda-happened stories: While recording "We Will Rock You" at Wessex studios, Mercury came face to face with Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious. "So you're this Freddie Platinum bloke that's supposed to be bringing ballet to the masses," Vicious snarled, prompting a completely unfazed response from Mercury: "Ah, Mr. Ferocious, we're trying our best, dear."
